Greetings District 5:

School will be out in a few weeks, which signals the start of summer vacation. Now is a great time to get outside and take advantage of our city's outdoor spaces. Visit Pracht Wetlands (pictured) when the sun is going down--the sunsets are beautiful! Bring the kids or grandkids to Buffalo or Westlink parks for playground time. While the weather is cool, take a morning walk around Brownthrush or Swanson parks.
During the summer months, I can spend more time on my favorite outdoor activity: golf. Since District 5 doesn't have a public golf course, I travel south to District 4 to play Tex Consolver or Auburn Hills. Green fees on the weekends for 18 holes at Auburn Hills are only $37 and $27 at Tex Consolver.
My second favorite outdoor activity is biking, and I want to make sure residents who enjoy bike-riding have a solid infrastructure for it not only in District 5 but in locations across the city. Do you like to bike? Share your thoughts with the City's Public Works staff and Toole Design.

Do you have thoughts or ideas about the City of Wichita's outdoor spaces? What's missing from our parks? What could be improved? Please email me at [email protected] and put "Outdoors" in the subject line.

Best,
J.V. Johnston

Construction updates for in District 5
Roads are a frequent topic with residents, so I want to keep you informed about what is happening to our streets and where.

Street updates in District 5:
  • Pavement repair has been completed on these streets, and an asphalt overlay will follow in early June:
  • Maize Road from Maple to Central
  • 13th Street from Country Acres to Sedgwick County Park
  • Ridge Road from 13th to 21st Street
  • A preservative seal will be applied to Maize Road from Central to 21st Street in early fall.

Other project updates for District 5:
  • The Patrol West substation design was awarded to Schafer Architecture. The firm will begin design work this month and have it completed in August for construction to begin in October.
  • The next phase of Pracht Wetlands Park will start with construction in June.
  • Westlink Library's expansion and renovation has an estimated completion date in November with the reopening in early 2025. Visit Westlink's temporary location at 7011 W. Central, Suite 205 in the southeast corner of Central & Ridge.

Potholes? Stray dog? Illegal dumping?

Relax and swim all summer long at Harvest Pool with a City Pool membership. For a family of four, a season pass is $200 with $30 for each additional family member. If you swim solo, individual memberships are $70. And your membership is good at the City's 6 swimming pools, including Minisa and College HillAll City swimming pools will open on Memorial Day (Monday, May 27) from 1 to 5 pm.

New updates at District Advisory Board meetings
District 5 Advisory Board logo
I've started asking each of my appointees the City's boards and commissions to report on their activities during our District 5 Advisory Board (DAB 5) meetings. Do you have questions as to how local artists or arts and cultural organizations are funded? Cultural Funding Committee Member Martha L. Linsner and Director of Arts & Cultural Services Lindsay Benacka will be our presenters at the District 5 Advisory Board meeting coming up this Monday night (May 6) at 6 pm at Wichita Water Works across the street from Sedgwick County Zoo.
