Breakfast Sandwich Battle: Jimmy Dean vs. Breakfast Best from Aldi

Jimmy Dean vs. Breakfast Best
Sausage, egg & cheese croissant sandwich battle

Breakfast sandwich against breakfast sandwich, name brand vs. discount brand, who makes the better sausage, egg & cheese croissant sandwich?

I look forward to having breakfast every morning, but I'm not talking about a simple bowl of cold cereal or sugar-loaded donuts. Bagels and cream cheese? Nope. I like to enjoy a hot breakfast, nothing elaborate mind you, nothing too heavy either... A simple breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee is quite satisfying thank you, a nice start to the day.

Sandwich packaging
Jimmy Dean has the better packaging

I'm a sucker for a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit, wrap, or croissant of some sort.  My 'go-to' over the years has been Jimmy Dean's sausage, egg & cheese croissant sandwiches.  Priced at $14.89 for a 12-count box at Costco, that's a very inexpensive - $1.24 per sandwich - tasty breakfast!

I also like Aldi's Breakfast Best sausage, egg & cheese croissant sandwiches.  I get these when I'm about to run out of Jimmy Dean and I'm not planning a bulk-shopping trip to Costco in the near future.  Costing $4.99 for a 4-count box, the Breakfast Best price is the same per sandwich at $1.24 each.

I've enjoyed both products for years now, but have never done a side-by-side comparison.

Who makes the better breakfast sandwich?

Sandwiches side by side
Heated up in the microwave, the sandwiches are similar in appearance, Jimmy Dean (left) has a deeper color on the croissant

Jimmy Dean gets the nod on packaging, it's more durable and I suspect would be better at preventing freezer burn, but I've never kept these tasty sandwiches around long enough in the freezer to find out.

Jimmy Dean also gets the nod on appearance, the croissant has better color.  Otherwise, there's no real difference visibly, each sandwich is 4.5 ounces, consisting of a sausage patty, a scrambled egg disk, a slice of American cheese, and the croissant.

I prepared two sandwiches at the same time in the microwave, as heating them up separately would skew the heat factor.

I bit into the Jimmy Dean first, it's good sausage, there is egg in every bite, a nice melt on the cheese, and the croissant is flaky.   Taking a bite of the Breakfast Best, it's a very similar bite.  Overall, the Jimmy Dean is a better eat.  In this side-by-side comparison, I took bites of the sandwiches - all ingredients at once (obviously), but I also singled out separate, small bites of sausage, bites of egg, cheese, and croissant.  The sausage patty in the Jimmy Dean sandwich was tastier and it was the flakier croissant.  No nuances were putting either the cheese or the egg better than the other.   The Jimmy Dean sausage is better seasoned and is an all-pork patty.  The Breakfast Best sausage patty is a pork and chicken combo.

Here's the nutritional breakdown:

The inside look
The under-the-lid reveal, Jimmy Dean on the left, Breakfast Best on the right

Jimmy Dean:  400 calories, 13 grams of protein, 28 grams of carbs, 5 grams of sugar, 580mg of sodium, 26 grams of total fat

Breakfast Best:  360 calories, 14 grams of protein, 28 grams of carbs, 6 grams of sugar, 720mg of sodium, 21 grams of total fat

Breakfast Best may have 40 fewer calories and 5 fewer total fat grams, but it's higher in sodium count.  Neither sandwich is a health food choice, but if you're watching the sodium count, Jimmy Dean is the slightly smarter pick.

In the Breakfast Sandwich Battle, I'm giving the nod to Jimmy Dean.  It's got a better sausage patty and a flakier croissant.  Both are priced at about $1.24 per sandwich, a very reasonable price for a tasty and convenient breakfast.  Both remain worthy of being repeat buys, but I'll probably buy an extra box of the Jimmy Dean sandwiches moving forward, eliminating the need to pick up a box of the Breakfast Best at Aldi to cover gaps between Costco shopping trips.
