I've been traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn't matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I'm on a mission to sample them all in the name of "burger science" (cough). For the burger criteria, click here.
Double Cheeseburger w/bacon and a side of onion rings
Today's burger travels took me to the west side of town and West Street Burgers. Touting Old Fashioned style burgers fresh off the grill and known for home made sides such as their crispy fresh cut fries, hand cut potato chips and awesome onion rings, West Street Burgers is a favorite for many burger loving folks residing on the west side of Wichita, affectionately a.k.a, "West Siders."
Ordering their Double Cheeseburger with a bacon add, this was a solid burger. The beef was nicely cooked, seasoned well with a good flat top crust. The bacon was applied in kind of a hap-hazard "X" method, points deducted for not getting bacon in every bite. I swear, I HAVE to conduct a class to all the burger makers in town on how to PROPERLY apply bacon to a burger! It's not hard ensuring bacon in every bite and using my technique doesn't add much time at all to prep. The Texas/Southern style of dressing a burger with just mustard, pickle and onion was good, but there wasn't enough of it. The bun was over toasted, specifically the bottom bun, resulting in a hard outer edge that took away rather than added to the enjoyment of the burger.
Nice flat top crust on the meat, but not the most even toast on the bun, a bit sparse on onion and pickle.
Side Note: The onion rings were good, they were seasoned well but a tad under cooked. A little more cooking time would have brought out the sweetness in the onion a little better and provided a more robust crunch. Perhaps adding some corn starch or rice flour to the coating mix would help. West Street Burgers beats the likes of Burger King, but they're just not the best onion rings out there. That detail on the best out there will be revealed at the conclusion of this Challenge.
Costing me $12.01 for the burger, onion rings and a drink, the West Street Burgers Double Cheeseburger w/bacon scored 52 points out of a possible 63, earning 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. I enjoyed my visit and will definitely be back again. Too bad they don't have a location on my side of town, yes, I'm an East Sider...

Didn't get bacon in every bite, bottom bun over toasted.
Located at 130 S West St, Wichita, KS 67213, the service was fast, friendly and quite courteous. I was in and out with my to-go order in about 7 minutes. West Street Burgers makes a solid Double Cheeseburger with bacon and it's worthy of a repeat buy. Here's another example of a local joint that outperforms the national fast food chains. Don't go to McDonald's or Hardee's, go to West Street Burgers instead! For about the same amount of money and the same amount of time, get a better burger and side!

Overall, a good burger, better than what you'll get at McDonald's or Hardee's. Buy Local.
