Best in Wichita Metro Burger Challenge 2022: How does The Hill Bar & Grill rate?

I'm traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn't matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I'll have to sample them all in the name of "burger science" (cough).  For the burger criteria, click here.

It was time for dinner on a Thursday evening, you'll never guess what I was having...  The burger adventure on this night took me to The Hill Bar & Grill and I was joined by Pam W.  We met at about 5pm and the place was steady busy with customers. We took advantage of Happy Hour (3 - 6pm weekdays) and $2 well drinks.  If you've never been to The Hill before, here's a description from their website: Hill Bar and Grill is a neighborhood hang out spot made up of the perfect combination of a wide selection of craft beers, a menu of American classics as well as being a great place to catch your favorite team play.  With 25 TVs, a good looking menu and a full bar in a comfortable setting, the description is spot on.

The Hill Bar & Grill Classic All American Burger w/bacon & Sidewinder Potatoes
Good looking food, not the best plate presentation

When it came time to order, Pam and I both went for their Classic All American Burger featuring a 1/2 pound Black Angus beef patty, American cheese, red onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a sesame bun.  The default side is either seasoned fries or chips, but both Pam and I opted out, with Pam upgrading to seasonal vegetables and I went with Sidewinder potatoes which are beer battered sidewinder cuts of potatoes, kind of a steak fries done in a spiral cut kind of thing.

After sharing a few laughs and some great conversation with Pam, our burgers soon arrived.  The initial visual appeal of those burgers was met with head nods of approval.  After taking the initial visual pic, I flipped the lid and was a bit disappointed though with what I saw...  Fast food type prep!  It was like things were kind of just thrown on without care.  If I wouldn't have made some adjustments, which I shouldn't have to do, I wouldn't have gotten bacon in every bite, no pickle in every bite, no onion in every bite.  A few things I really couldn't do much with was the lack of mayo, too light of a toast on the bun and the one slice of small tomato.  Sounds like this burger isn't going to score very well right?  Well, after making those adjustments I finally did take that first bite.  The burger patty was cooked to perfection.  With a fantastic flat top crust, it was perfectly seasoned and juicy.  This patty was indeed the star and carried the rest of the burger components.  The bacon too was perfectly cooked, nicely crisp and packed great flavor.   Pam also noted how good her burger was and our table went silent for a bit in enjoyment.

The under the lid reveal
Some sloppy burger prep, adjustments had to be made, less than generous with the mayo.

Side Note:  The Sidewinder Potatoes were stellar.  The beer batter prep provides for a flavorful light crunch on the outside and these things were SUPER fluffy on the inside.  Seasoned perfectly, I was very pleased with this side upgrade, despite not receiving the aioli that's supposed to come with it.  Pam's veggies however were kind of "eh."  A medley of carrots, red onion, green beans, zucchini, squash, sauteed with garlic, the garlic wasn't very pronounced and the side overall was under seasoned.

After enjoying our burgers, we ordered a dessert to share, going for the donut holes.  Tasty, tasty, tasty!  Served with three dipping sauce options, caramel, chocolate and raspberry, the cinnamon and sugar coated delights nicely topped off a really good burger meal.

Classic All American Burger
Great flat top crust on the burger, but that little tomato...

Costing about $17 with tax for the burger, bacon add and side upgrade, The Hill Bar & Grill Classic All American Burger scored 57 points out of a possible 63, earning it 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  The base price for the Classic All American Burger is $13 with the default side of seasoned fries or chips and that flavor The Hill delivers makes it more than worthy of a repeat buy.  Better yet, take advantage of $5 Burger night on Mondays!
