Best in Wichita Metro Burger Challenge 2022: How does Dempsey's Burger Pub rate?

I'm traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn't matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I'll have to sample them all in the name of "burger science" (cough).  For the burger criteria, click here.

After taking a two-day hiatus from the Burger Challenge, today I ventured out and hit Dempsey's Burger Pub for lunch.  Located in Clifton Square on Douglas, Dempsey's makes a bold statement on their website About page:  Fresh, never frozen angus beef from Creekstone Farms in Arkansas, KS as well as fresh bread from Farm to Market Bread Co. in Kansas City. We pride ourselves in serving our customers the best burger in town.

That's a good looking basket, except the hanging out like a cow's tongue bacon that should be ON the burger...

The best burger in town?  Well, that's what this challenge is about.

I entered Dempsey's Pub right at opening time, 11am, and was greeted with a big smile at the door.  Seated immediately at a table with a view into the kitchen, my waitress quickly introduced herself, setting me up with silverware and a glass of water.  Not a minute after setting the menu down in deciding on a burger choice, Katie was table side ready to take my order.  I went with the House Burger and a bacon add.  The burger is topped with sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and served on a brioche bun.

A culinary Oops! Putting bacon in an "X" on top of the patty fails to deliver bacon in every bite. I swear I'm going to have to write a bacon application tutorial!

As I passed time between watching ESPN on the big screen, the crew working in the kitchen (they were busting it!) and texting, it didn't take long for my burger to arrive.  A great looking basket and a HUGE portion of fries, I couldn't wait to dive in.  I took the first bite of the burger...  The juicy beef was cooked perfectly, with a thin line of pink running through it but sadly, it was under seasoned.  And you can see the seasoning the patty was hit with during cooking in a pic below, which left me to wonder whether the other side was hit (couldn't visually tell, it was covered in melted cheddar, but of note, it didn't taste like it had been and to steal a line from Emeril Lagasse, I hate one-sided tasting food.) or if any seasoning is used at all in forming the patties.  The bacon was nice and crisp, but it was applied in the culinary Oops "X" way on top of the patty.  This fails to provide the customer the ultimate bacon in every bite experience.  The cheddar was nicely melted and sharp.  There was excellent coverage and portion of the veggies and they were fresh, hitting all those flavor notes and bringing balance to the burger.  Wrapping everything up was the brioche bun with an adequate toast.

Good crust on the patty, with all veggies in every bite.

Side Note:  Killer Sweet Potato Fries!  These fries rival the fries I had at Bricktown Brewery on Monday, the best sweet potato fries I've had so far in this challenge.  Perfectly fried and perfectly seasoned, these fries hit the characteristics you're looking for in a good fry, the slightly crispy exterior and the light and fluffy potato interior.  Dempsey's also kicks things up a notch by providing a variety of their house dipping sauces with the fries.  Nice touch, most places just give you one dipping option.

Costing me $14.78 with tax for the burger and fry side, the Dempsey's Burger Pub 'House Burger' with a bacon add scored 55 out of a possible 63 points, earning it 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  One point shy of hitting the 5 star level, the application of bacon and an under seasoned beef patty kept this burger from being 5 star rated. For a place that claims to have the best burger in town, they come up a bit short.

It's a mouthful of a burger!  But the bacon belongs on the inside with the rest of the burger components for a complete, layers of flavor bite.

Located at 3700 E Douglas Ave #78, Wichita, KS 67208, the service at Dempsey's Burger Pub is the best I've experienced so far in this challenge.  Katie and the rest of the wait staff was very attentive, detail oriented and it was all done with a friendly smile!   And kudos to the kitchen crew which was cranking out some food with the lunch crowd starting to file in as I was settling my bill.  The killer fries, juicy burger and a couple beers cost me a total of $22.78, a very reasonably priced lunch.  I look forward to trying some of the other menu options very soon!
