I'm traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn't matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I'll have to sample them all in the name of "burger science" (cough). For the burger criteria, click here.
For today's burger sampling, I hit the Bionic Burger on East Harry. A family owned operation, Bionic Burger has been serving Wichita since 1977. With four locations in the Wichita Metro, Bionic Burger features fresh beef including cuts from T-Bone, strip steak and sirloin in their patties that get seared with grilled onion then served on a toasted bun.
Hitting the drive thru a bit after 11am, the place was already busy, with four vehicles ahead of me. I went with the Bacon Cheddar Burger, a combo meal to include Sweet Potato fries and a Dr. Pepper. Here's the description of the Bacon Cheddar Burger from the website: Mayo, Raw & Grilled Onions, Lettuce, Tomato, Bacon, American & Cheddar Cheese Sauce.
I was informed they were out of lettuce. I appreciated that tidbit of information, I'm thinking some other restaurants would just not tell you, especially with drive thru service. And it's not like no lettuce is a deal breaker, but it is going to be a ding in the veggie score.
The line in the drive thru moved quickly and I received my meal in less time than it took for Supertramp's Breakfast in America to play on The Fox, Wichita's Classic Rock, 104.5.
The aroma's emanating from the bag were mouthwatering enticing on the quick drive home, I think it was the essence of grilled onion that was getting to me. In unwrapping the burger, it's a decent visual appeal that doesn't suffer from sloppy sandwich prep that you typically see with many fast food restaurants. In taking that first bite, the beef was seasoned well, made more robust with the patty getting seared along with the grilled onion. I like the cheese sauce, but it does make for a messier eat along with the generously applied mayo dripping from the edges. Bacon coverage was decent (half slices that were doubled up) and it was crispy. The bun had a nice toast to it and adding raw onion to the sandwich is a nice touch, a bit of sharpness to balance out the sweet in the grilled onion. The burger could have used another slice of tomato however to provide tomato juiciness in every bite. And while I stated no lettuce wasn't a deal breaker, the sandwich did lack a bit a freshness and veggie crunch that comes with a classically prepared bacon cheeseburger. Also lacking some tartness (the burger doesn't come with pickle), I did have to add some mustard. Overall, a very solid burger with the patty definitely the star. Holding this burger back however are the other elements making up a classic bacon cheeseburger.
Side Note: The Sweet Potatoes fries were a nice change of pace and the portion is huge! They pair really well with a garlic aioli (something you'll have to whip up. Mayo and garlic powder will do in a pinch).
Costing me $11.05 for the combo meal, the Bionic Burger Bacon Cheddar Burger scored 51 points out of a possible 63 points, earning 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Bionic makes a solid burger and it's Bachelor on the Cheap wallet friendly. It's a satisfying eat and worthy of a repeat buy.
The Bionic Burger visited on this occasion is located at 3257 E Harry St, Wichita, KS 67218. The service was courteous, informative and fast.
