I'm traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn't matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I'll have to sample them all in the name of "burger science" (cough). For the burger criteria, click here.
For today's Burger Challenge lunch, I headed over to Broadway Burgers & BBQ. Here's the description of this iconic burger joint from their Facebook page: Here you don't have to choose between favorites. Fresh burgers and BBQ smoked and grilled every single day. Our hamburger is fresh never frozen, delivered to us daily. We hand cut our french fries and fixings everyday. The BBQ is made from the finest meats and cooked in our smoker, that sits out in front of the restaurant to let everyone know we are here cooking!
As is my Burger Challenge habit in skipping breakfast, I walked into Broadway Burgers & BBQ a bit after 11am to enjoy my first meal of the day. There were already a number of customers ahead of me and folks hitting the drive thru. But it didn't take long at all for my turn to place an order and I went with of course, a bacon cheeseburger, a single (patties are 1/4 pound). To help keep their prices low, toppings such as lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion are available by request only. There's a sign posted behind the counter where you order. I can appreciate that, besides, not everybody likes a fully loaded classic burger with all the toppings so why put them on by default, right? I do like a loaded burger however, also getting mayo, mustard and ketchup with it. Making it a meal, I ordered a french fry side and a soda.
After receiving a cup for the self serve and pouring myself a Pepsi (the fountain was out of ice or it hadn't yet been filled to start the day), I found a seat. It didn't take long for my burger and fries to be delivered to my table, served on a plastic style plate. It's a good looking burger with an inviting appeal.
I took the first bite, NICE! The burger patty was seasoned well, juicy and had a nice flat top crust. There was a nice coverage of bacon, but one of the slices was a bit chewy and stringy, it was one of those that you can't quite bite through and the whole thing pulls away and out from the burger. There was a generous portion of veggies, on point and fresh, the cheese was melted nicely and there was a perfect toast on the bun. Overall this was a very nicely balanced bacon cheeseburger hitting all the flavor and texture notes you're looking for, savory, crispy, creamy, tart, fresh, juicy.
Side Note: The side of fries was a generous portion, fried and seasoned nicely.
Costing me $10.19 for a very enjoyable lunch, the Broadway Burger & BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger scored 57 points out of a possible 63, earning it 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. It was quite tasty and I wish I would have gotten a double, it's most definitely a repeat buy.
Located at 1659 S Broadway, Wichita, KS 67211, Broadway Burger & BBQ cranks out a darn good burger while providing friendly, informative and attention to burger detail service.
