What a great spot for a satisfying breakfast!

Specializing in Southern inspired breakfast and lunch dishes, the Magnolia Cafe opened up back in May.  I stopped by early on a Tuesday morning, looking forward to my first meal of the day, my first meal at this cafe.

Walking in at a bit before 7am, I was greeted warmly by Kathryn and since I was flying solo on this occasion, found a seat at the bar.

Kathryn quickly set me up with a menu, silverware and a glass of water.  As she disappeared into the kitchen, I perused the menu.

Magnolia Cafe Menu
Fantastic Southern Cuisine, made from scratch

I was tempted by just about everything, the shrimp and grits, scratch biscuits & gravy, chicken & waffles, an assortment of egg combos (one of them includes fried green tomatoes - YUM!) but I went with the Pork Belly Hash.  A good breakfast hash is comfort food and pork belly hash sounded mighty comforting to me.  Here's the description from the menu:  Pork belly, crispy sweet potatoes, peppers, onions and
creamed greens topped with a fried free-range egg and chow chow.

If you don't know what "chow chow" is, it's a pickled vegetable relish that can eaten alone or used to top a dish to provide some extra tanginess and crunch.

Everything at Magnolia Cafe is made from scratch daily using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and the Pork Belly hash puts that dedication on display.  Wow what a great dish!  The pork belly was cooked perfectly, seasoned well, melt in your mouth tender.  The sweet potatoes, peppers and onions was a perfect marriage of hash bliss, complimented by the creamed greens.  The egg, also perfectly cooked, had the runny yolk you're looking for and was a delicious delight to dip in.  Putting this dish over the top was that chow chow, delivering that little bit of tart crunch, balancing out the pork fat.  As I like to say, "It's Another Dose of YUM!"

Adding to my enjoyment, was one of the best Bloody Mary's I've had in a long time.  It was smooth, yet delivered a little punch and the candied bacon garnish was a nice touch.

An excellent Bloody Mary

Costing me $18.08 + tip, I'm giving the Magnolia Cafe 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  Kathryn provided friendly, top notch service, the food was fantastic, the drink stellar and I left the Magnolia Cafe well fed and feeling very satisfied.  With a fresh, comfortable, welcoming atmosphere, this restaurant is worthy of a repeat visit and I'm going for the shrimp and grits!

5 stars
