Date Night Dinner at Wasabi East

Wasabi East, Wichita

Kudos to Vicki S for getting me back into sushi.  She's a fellow foodie, but I'm not sure she knows it...

I met up with her on a Thursday night, a dinner date at Wasabi East.

Arriving a bit early at about 6:15pm, I stepped in and was welcomed with enthusiasm by a member of the wait staff and seated immediately.  I had time to peruse both the food and drink menus and place an order for a drink.  Angela, the waitress - great smile - took my order for a shot of Soju, flavored with Blueberry and some mixology involving Malibu and lime juice.  It was dangerously smooth.

Vicki arrived at 6:30pm and Angela didn't miss a beat, introducing herself to Vicki and giving us a couple minutes to decide on what to eat from all the great options.  When we were ready, Angela took our orders, starting with an appetizer of Edamame.  For dinner Vicki went with the Mango Habanero Roll - Shrimp tempura, mango, habanero masago topped with salmon, avocado and finished with mango habanero sauce.  I went with the Crazy Stonehenge - A deep fried roll with shrimp tempura, avocado and cream cheese covered with crab sticks and finished with spicy mayo, eel sauce and crunch.  Desiring a glass of wine with dinner, I went with the plum wine, Vicki ordered the Reisling.

We dove into the food before taking pics, there are a few bites missing, oops! My bad...

Our wine soon arrived and our dinners shortly thereafter.  Sampling from each other's plates, they were both fantastic!  I wasn't sure about the Mango Habanero Roll going in.  Expecting some heat, it wasn't overpowering at all, it was delightfully balanced with the mango.  All those flavors, the shrimp, salmon, avocado all wrapped up in that mouthful - the beauty of sushi, all that flavor in one bite - it was as I like to say, "Another dose of YUM!"

My Crazy Stonehenge was equally good, the fried tempura texture, the pleasant spice, but what put this over the top was the combination of cream cheese and crunch!  If there's any such thing as sushi comfort food, this is it!

Angela was very attentive throughout our meal, stopping by to see how our dinners were and to check on drink refills, then stopping by a bit later to ask if we cared for dessert.  As Angela went off to prep the bill, that's when Vicki realized we never received our Edamame appetizer.  A minute or so later, Angela was back at our table, apologizing for dropping the ball with the appetizer.  No harm, no foul, we didn't get charged for it and the sushi rolls we thoroughly enjoyed were more than satisfying and quite filling!

Too anxious to eat before taking the pic, again, my bad #2...

Wasabi East is located at 3242 N Rock Rd #112, Wichita, KS 67226.  The service was terrific despite the forgotten Edamame appetizer.  Costing a bit over $58 + tip, this was a fun wine and dine.  I'm giving Wasabi East 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars and the restaurant is definitely worthy of a repeat visit, especially on date night.  I look forward to sampling another delicious selection from the menu!

5 stars
