Eating fish sandwiches on a daily basis for lunch and dinner... You know I'm doing this in the name of 'Food Science' (cough), right? I'm eating through the bad and average sandwiches so you don't have to...
In 2018 I reviewed the fish sandwiches from national fast food chains but I figured it's time for a fish sandwich update. I'll be reviewing all those restaurants again, as there's been some changes, some 'new and improved' sandwiches as well as new offerings. But for this 2022 review, along with the fast food joints I'll be including fast casual chains as well as the local restaurants, making it a "Who makes the best fish sandwich in Wichita?" Challenge!
I'm looking forward to seeing who has truly improved their sandwich from the last review and relishing the chance to sample new restaurants too! See what I did there.... "Relishing the chance..."
Today I went to Fish and More to sample their fish sandwich. A local joint, Fish and More was not reviewed back in 2018.
Fish and More celebrates catfish with their fish sandwich and the breading features a classic cornmeal crunch. It's seasoned well and really nicely done. My fillet was fried perfectly, golden, brown and delicious on the outside and flaky fish on the inside. And notice from the pic, the fillet goes WAY beyond the bread borders so the fish to bread ratio can't be questioned. But about that bread... Simply presented, the fish is served on naked sliced bread with your choice of sauces. I stayed classic and chose tartar. I have to be honest here, I'm sure there's some tradition involved in serving the fish on sliced bread, but I think the sandwich could really be elevated with a better bread vessel like a Hoagie Roll, Po Boy style. And while the tartar was creamy with a note of tart and complimented the crunchy, flaky fish, some shredded lettuce would be nice to offset the starch of the bread. You've got protein, breading and bread, it needs an offset, a squeeze of lemon would work too.
Scoring 47 out of a possible 63 points and costing me $9.68 for a combo meal to include a side of Mac & Cheese and a drink, I'm giving the Fish and More Fish Sandwich 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. This sandwich is just a couple of small adds away from being a 5 star sandwich. The fillet itself is the best I've tasted so far in this challenge. And OH MY THAT MAC & CHEESE! It was STELLAR! It's the best I've had in fast food in this town. The large elbow noodles were perfectly cooked with just a slight Al Dente' edge to them (you know how you can get mushy noodles with some mac & cheeses? I hate that!) and that cheese sauce is spot on! Fish and More's Mac & Cheese is way better than Arby's, Chick-fil-A's or KFC's. And yes, better than Popeye's or Church's too. Gotta love it when a local joint does it better than the national chains!
This was my first visit to Fish and More and it won't be my last! I'm looking forward to sampling other items from the menu. Thank you Fish and More!
Located at 2021 Oliver, Wichita, KS 67218, the service at Fish and More was excellent. I pulled into the parking lot with several cars in it, a VERY good sign and although the lady at the front counter was taking customer orders from those ahead of me in line, she still acknowledged my entry. Providing informative service with a smile, I got my made to order carry out meal in under 10 minutes.
