Drink Review: Bird Dog Apple Whiskey

By Mike Thayer

Bird Dog AppleBlended and flavored whiskeys are red hot right now, consumer demand for brown spirits continues to rise with American Whiskey in particular seeing some phenomenal sales growth.

Regular readers know that I am a fan of flavored whiskey, I've always got a bottle of something in my freezer for a chilled shot or flavored specialty in the liquor cabinet to enjoy on the rocks.  My favorite in all this tasting fun so far, has been Yukon Jack Jacapple.

I recently tried Crown Royal Regal Apple, so in staying with the apple flavor theme, tonight it was a tasting of Bird Dog Apple Whiskey.  I've sampled Bird Dog Blackberry Whiskey, which I enjoyed, but how will the Bird Dog Apple compare to Yukon Jack Jacapple?

Here's the description from the Bird Dog website:

Bird Dog Apple Flavored Whiskey flourishes with lush apple flavor. Barrel aged and finally ripe.

Potency: 80 PROOF / 40% Alc/Vol

Color: Golden Amber

Nose: Ripe, fresh apples

Body: Succulent apple flavors combine for a savory, smooth experience

Finish: Sweet apple fades into bourbon with a lingering warm, cinnamon zest

Of note, this whiskey is 80 proof. Most other flavored whiskeys are 70 proof, so this has a little more 'kick' to it.  I served up this whiskey in a straight shot and on the rocks.  Bird Dog pretty much delivers on all the promo above.  The nose is fruity apple, the color is inviting and you get all as advertised in the swirl and swallow, the cinnamon notes come through.  What I like best about Bird Dog is the finish, you get the base bourbon, which is exactly what you want in a flavored whiskey, a compliment.  While best as a chilled shot and a good one, I still prefer Yukon Jack Jacapple.  Costing me about $16 for a 750ml bottle, the price is reasonable and it's worth a repeat buy (if you can't find the Yukon).  Bird Dog Apple Whiskey gets 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.

Drink Review: Crown Royal Regal Apple

By Mike Thayer

Blended and flavored whiskeys are red hot right now, consumer demand for brown spirits continues to rise with American Whiskey in particular seeing some phenomenal sales growth.

20190412_110637Currently, there's a big buzz about Crown Royal Peach...  The stuff is SO popular right now, it's not available, liquor stores are sold out and it's on back order.  So in lieu of that, I picked up a bottle of Crown Royal Apple.  How will it compare to the Yukon Jack Jacapple?

Here's the description of the flavored whiskey from the Crown Royal website: To create this extraordinary blend, Crown Royal whiskies are hand-selected by our master whisky blenders and infused with Regal Gala Apples and apple flavors. The result is a delicious Canadian whisky balanced with notes of crisp apple flavor.

20190412_110931As I have with all the other flavored whiskey samplings, I served up this whiskey in a straight shot and on the rocks.  You definitely get the apple right off the bat in the nose.  The swirl and swallow is smooth but almost bordering on being apple forward and you get some nice undertones of cinnamon and oak.  But the most important thing in what you want in a good flavored whiskey, getting the base whiskey in the finish and it's there.  Costing me $20 for a 750ml bottle, the price is reasonable and this whiskey is worth a repeat buy but is it as good as Yukon Jack Jacapple?   Nope, in the Yukon vs. Crown Royal Apple Whiskey battle, Yukon is still King of the Apple Hill in my book.  Crown Royal gets 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.

Food Review: Garden Lites Veggie Bacon & Potato Frittatas

By Mike Thayer

Garden LitesI look forward to having breakfast every morning, but I'm not talking about a simple bowl of cold cereal or sugar loaded donuts.  Bagels and cream cheese?  Nope.  I like to enjoy a hot breakfast, nothing elaborate mind you, nothing too heavy either...  A simple breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee is quite satisfying thank you, a nice start to the day.

I'm a sucker for a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit, wrap or croissant of some sort, but I'm open to other options and a little variety.  So when grocery shopping one day and in the freezer section of breakfast foods I happened upon these Veggie Bacon & Potato Frittatas made by Garden Lites. Going meatless for breakfast is not usual for me, so this purchase most certainly falls into the 'open to other options' category.

20190413_080633Being marketed as a healthier breakfast alternative, these frittatas sound decent enough, potatoes, onions, cheddar cheese, eggs...  there's also cauliflower which I've been into lately (riced cauliflower, Parmesan, salt and pepper isn't a bad substitute for hash brown potatoes, much lower in carbs too) and the veggie bacon is made with Pinto Beans.   They are tiny frittatas though, according to the box the serving size is one frittata at 80 calories.....  I microwaved three for breakfast.

So how are they?

I'm not buying them again.  They are WAY under-seasoned and there's no bacon flavor at all, not even a little bit. I know, what did I expect from "Veggie Bacon" right?  I've had veggie burgers before and there are a couple good ones out there, so I was kind of expecting something at least somewhat resembling bacon here, but no, the pinto beans just don't cut it.  They may look like bacon bits, but in the flavor department, nope.  Garden Lites should be ashamed of themselves calling it "Veggie Bacon."  Regarding the other main ingredients, you do get the onion and cheddar cheese flavor notes and the egg is surprisingly moist coming out of the microwave, but overall, these frittatas are really, really boring.  Hey Garden Lites, veggies like potato, cauliflower and yes, pinto beans need seasoning!

20190413_074637A bit pricey at $12.59 for a box of 20 frittatas, that's about $0.63 per frittata or if having three for breakfast as I did, that's a $1.88 breakfast, a very unsatisfying breakfast.  It may be a healthier breakfast alternative but it really comes up short in the flavor department.  I'm giving Garden Lites Veggie Bacon & Potato Frittatas just two out of five Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  They are NOT a repeat buy.

Kicking popcorn up another notch - Duck Sauce Popcorn

By Mike Thayer

20190210_190755-1Why is popcorn one of my favorite snack foods? 1. It tastes great, 2. It's WAY cheaper than a bag of chips, 3. You can add just about any flavor to it by popping your own, turning it into a gourmet treat!

Don't buy those pre-packed popcorn seasonings, create your own flavor with whatever you have on hand.  Today, I'm using some "Duck Sauce" packets I have leftover from enjoying some Chinese take out the other night.

20190411_140943-1Try this the next time you pop some corn.... When melting butter while that popcorn pops, add two packets of "Duck Sauce" to the butter.  Add a pinch of salt, stir to incorporate.  After mixing the melted butter with the popcorn in a big serving bowl, give that bowl a healthy shake of Parmesan cheese!  It's another dose of YUM!  Yessssir.....  popcorn, tasty, tasty, tasty!

Take advantage of all those leftover flavor packets from restaurants, be it mustard, honey, honey mustard, bbq sauce, sriracha, you name it!  Combine it with butter and you've got some rockin' flavors for seasoning popcorn!

Drink Review: Old Camp Peach Pecan Whiskey

By Mike Thayer

20190410_182720-1So I walk into my neighborhood liquor store for the third time in the last couple weeks, looking for Crown Peach Whiskey and the store is STILL sold out with what apparently is great stuff on back order!  Other stores in my neck of the woods are sold out too, that Crown Whiskey is all the rage right now!

So tonight, in lieu of what I was shopping for, I went with Old Camp Peach Pecan Whiskey, a recommendation from one of the guys working the store.  The Crown Peach will have to be reviewed another day.

Blended and flavored whiskeys are red hot right now, consumer demand for brown spirits continues to rise with American Whiskey in particular seeing some phenomenal sales growth.

There's really not much of a description of the Old Camp Peach Pecan whiskey either on the bottle or on the company website, other than to say it's "smooth"....

It's not.  "Eh" is a good word to describe it.

As I have with all the other flavored whiskey samplings, I served up this whiskey in a straight shot and on the rocks.  This stuff is overly sweet, coming off as more of a Peach Schnapps rather than a flavored whiskey.  You do get the pecan in the finish, a redeeming quality, but overall, I'm regretting buying a fifth of this whiskey.  The nose is too fruity, the swirl and swallow is overpowering peach with that hint of pecan in the finish.  Costing me about $22 for a 750ml bottle, the price is NOT Bachelor on the Cheap friendly and it is NOT a repeat buy.  Old Camp Peach Pecan Whiskey gets just 2 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  This is another whiskey fail that will either become an ice cream topper, or used to create more BBQ sauce.   Oh, and I think this is the first time the store guy's recommendation failed.  I should have gone for the Bird Dog Peach.

Cheap Fried Rice Eats in Wichita

By Mike Thayer

20190410_134110-1I'm a sucker for good fried rice and per a recommendation, I stopped in a small, tucked away from the main street joint called yes, literally, "Fried Rice."

Located at 2419 S. Glendale, just east of the intersection of Pawnee and Oliver, this place makes great chicken fried rice, outstanding egg rolls and the price is only $4.50 to include a drink!   It's a classic carry-out order kind of place, cranking out some great eats.

Per that recommendation, I got their "Daily Special" which is a generous helping of chicken or pork fried rice, two egg rolls and a drink for $4.50.  Beef or shrimp fried rice goes for $5 and replacing the egg rolls with crab rangoon will cost you another $1.

This place will now be my go-to when I'm in the mood for Chinese.

4 stars
At just $4.50, you can't beat that price.  Look at all that food for such a low price and it's TASTY, TASTY, TASTY!  Fried Rice gets 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars, so if you haven't already done so, it's definitely worth checking out.

Drink Review: Bird Dog Blackberry Whiskey

By Mike Thayer

20190408_183446-1So I walk into my neighborhood liquor store for the second time in a week looking for Crown Peach Whiskey and the store is STILL sold out with what apparently is great stuff on back order!  Other stores in my neck of the woods are sold out too, that Crown Whiskey is all the rage right now!

So tonight, in lieu of what I was shopping for, I went with Bird Dog Blackberry Whiskey.  The Crown Peach will have to be reviewed another day.

Blended and flavored whiskeys are red hot right now, consumer demand for brown spirits continues to rise with American Whiskey in particular seeing some phenomenal sales growth.

Here's the description of the Bird Dog Blackberry from their website:  Bird Dog Blackberry Flavored Whiskey is crafted by infusing two hand selected, all-natural blackberry flavors. The distinctive taste was nationally recognized during the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Potency: 80 PROOF / 40% Alc/Vol

Color: Golden Amber

Nose: Sweet blackberries and warm bourbon

Body: Sleek and smooth blackberry sweetness  upfront with the subtle fade into traditional notes of honey, oak and a rich bourbon

Finish: Slight sweetness rolls into warm aged bourbon

This particular whiskey was one of the earlier arrivals to the flavored whiskey table, becoming popular after its award winning performance in competition back in 2010.   Also of note, this whiskey is 80 proof.  Most other flavored whiskeys are 70 proof, so this has a little more 'kick' to it.

As I have with all the other flavored whiskey samplings, I served up this whiskey in a straight shot and on the rocks.  Bird Dog delivers on all the promo above.  The nose is fruity, the color is inviting and you get all as advertised in the swirl and swallow.  The best thing about this whiskey though is the finish, it's spot on.  That slight sweetness says blackberry, yet BOURBON.  That's exactly what you want in a flavored whiskey, a compliment.  While best as a chilled shot and a very good one at that, I still prefer Yukon Jack Jacapple.  It's just a flavor pairing preference thing, apple vs. blackberry.  Costing me about $16 for a 750ml bottle, the price is reasonable and it's worth a repeat buy.  Bird Dog Blackberry Whiskey gets 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.
