A Bachelor on the Cheap Challenge: Eating Fast Food Value Meals for a Week on a $50 Budget, Day 5, Breakfast

Mike Thayer 2016 (2)By Mike Thayer

Can you eat nothing but fast food value meals for a week on just $50?

That's a budget of just $7.14 a day.

Are there enough restaurants out there offering value meals that will fit in the budget? Will there be enough variety? Will I stay full enough, no snacking required?

Can I stay under budget and eat well to boot?

It's Day 5 and I'm needing something different for breakfast

I've tried to avoid defaulting back to a restaurant I've already ordered from in this challenge. It's been tough doing that though and I have indeed visited McDonald's three times so far in order to meet that challenge budget.

Wanting something different for breakfast, it occurred to me that I haven't had breakfast pizza for awhile, so I ventured out to Quik Trip.  Yes, I know, convenience store food, but don't knock it, QT puts out a pretty decent breakfast pizza and the price is right.

20180127_081756But to my dismay, there was no pizza available at the QT I chose and the kitchen was all tarped off going through an obvious remodel of some sort.  All that was available for a hot breakfast was a small assortment of breakfast burritos, biscuits and crescent sandwiches.  With no time to travel to another QT or restaurant for breakfast, I grabbed an egg, bacon and 2 cheese burrito.  Sigh.

The disappointment cost me $2.13.   The burrito served the purpose of filling my stomach, but was otherwise unremarkable.  QT may make good breakfast pizza, but breakfast burritos?  No so much... My money would have been better spent on two McDonald's sausage and egg burritos for the same price, much tastier too.

Meal total for the day:

Breakfast:  $2.13

Cumulative total for the Challenge:

Day 1:  $7.29

Day 2:  $6.44

Day 3:  $7.27

Day 4:  $7.36

Day 5:  $2.13 (breakfast)

I went over budget by 15 cents on Day 1.  I was under budget by 55 cents on Day 2.  I went over budget by 13 cents on Day 3.  After Day 4 I've got a whopping 5 cent surplus working for me.  With that surplus in mind, I've got $5.06 left to spend today.

Grand Total:  $30.49 so far, with Day 5 lunch and dinner to go

The nice thing about this challenge - No dish washing required!  Bonus!

And then there's bonus #2:  A growing surplus of napkins!

Bonus #3:  The opportunity to rack up on condiment packets.....  You knew that was coming, right?  What bachelor does NOT have condiment packets in his fridge?  I've racked up ketchup, mustard, mayo, salt, pepper, ranch dressing, buffalo sauce and honey!
